Shipping Ammunition, Magazines and Parts by State: What Comes to Your Door
Firearms go to a dealer. Everything else we sell goes to your door, and for most customers in most states that is the end of the story. A handful of states have rules on ammunition, magazines, specific parts and shipping itself, and a buyer who orders into one of them should know what will arrive and what will not. This page sets out the rules by category and by state as of September 2026, and explains how the checkout applies them.
Ammunition
Federal law lets ammunition ship to your home address by ground carrier, and requires the buyer to be 18 for rifle and shotgun ammunition and 21 for handgun ammunition. Most states add nothing. California requires ammunition to be delivered through a licensed vendor with a background check, so we do not ship it there. New York requires ammunition sales to go through a licensed dealer with a state check, so we do not ship it there either. Illinois requires a state firearms owner card for delivery; Massachusetts requires a state licence; New Jersey requires a firearms purchaser card for handgun ammunition; Connecticut requires a state permit or ammunition certificate. Washington DC and some cities, including Chicago, have their own rules. Everywhere else, ammunition ships to the address you give, by the box or the case, with an adult signature where the carrier requires it. Ammunition never ships by air.
Magazines
Magazine capacity is capped in California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Hawaii, Illinois, Washington, Oregon, Vermont, Rhode Island, Delaware and the District of Columbia, mostly at ten rounds, and in Colorado at fifteen. A magazine over the cap will not ship into those states, and the checkout removes it from the order before payment rather than shipping it and letting the carrier or the state seize it. Magazines at or under the cap ship normally. A few cities in states without a cap have their own ordinances; we apply them where we know of them and rely on the buyer to know their own city.
Feature-ban states and parts
The same group of states defines restricted semi-automatic rifles and pistols by their features. A part that would make a firearm restricted in one of those states, such as a threaded barrel, a flash hider, a pistol grip stock or a folding stock for a rifle, is lawful to buy in most of the country and may not be in California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland or Hawaii, depending on the gun it goes on. We ship parts to those states only where the part itself is not restricted; the buyer is responsible for what the part is fitted to. Ordinary parts, sights, slings, grips, cleaning kits, holsters, optics and lights ship everywhere.
Serialized parts
A frame, a receiver or a lower receiver is a firearm under federal law and always goes to a dealer, wherever you live. Unfinished frames and receivers are treated as firearms in several states and we do not sell them at all. Upper receivers, slides, barrels and bolt carriers are not firearms federally and ship to your door.
Optics, lights and lasers
Scopes, red dots, weapon lights and visible lasers are accessories in every state and ship to your door. Night-vision and thermal devices are lawful to own but subject to export controls; we do not ship them outside the United States. Infrared lasers are sold in civilian power classes.
Suppressors and NFA items
Suppressors and short-barrelled rifles and shotguns are regulated under the National Firearms Act and require a federal application and tax stamp. We do not sell them.
How the checkout applies all this
When you enter a shipping address, the checkout compares every item in the cart against the rules for that state and, where we know them, that city. Items that may not be delivered there are removed from the order with a note explaining why, before you pay. Firearms in the cart are routed to the dealer you name; everything else is routed to the address. If an item is removed that you believe is lawful at your address, contact us before you order; the rules change and we would rather ship than not.
Reloading components
Powder, primers, bullets, brass and reloading tools are not ammunition under federal law but powder and primers are hazardous materials for shipping purposes, which adds a carrier surcharge and rules out air freight. Where we carry them, they ship by ground with the hazmat fee shown at checkout and only to states that allow delivery; California and New York apply their ammunition rules to components as well. Bullets, brass and tools ship like any other part.
Carriers and signatures
Ammunition, magazines and parts ship by ground carrier. Orders containing ammunition and orders over a value threshold require an adult signature at delivery, and some states require it for all ammunition. Firearms ship by a carrier that accepts them, to the dealer only. Tracking numbers are emailed when the order leaves.
Shipping into the restricted states
- California: firearms to a dealer subject to the roster; no ammunition; magazines at ten; feature-restricted parts not shipped.
- New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland: firearms to a dealer subject to state lists; ammunition only where the state allows delivery; magazines at ten; feature parts as above.
- Illinois: firearms to a dealer; ammunition with a state card; magazines at ten under the 2023 law.
- Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Vermont, Rhode Island, Delaware, Hawaii: firearms to a dealer; ammunition where allowed; magazines at the state cap.
- Everywhere else: firearms to a dealer; ammunition, magazines, parts and accessories to your door.
